My Honest Experience with a Tulsa Midwife

(and Why I’d Do It All Over Again)

If you’ve been around here long, you probably know I had both of my babies under the care of a Tulsa midwife, and both of my girls were born at home in my living room 🙂 We got pregnant in 2021 and despite the fact that I had always assumed I’d give birth in a hospital and have an epidural, our eyes were opened during the COVID years and definitely nudged me down a more non-traditional path.

While I have previously shared my birth stories (baby #1 and baby #2 linked!), I haven’t fully shared yet just how much my Tulsa midwife shaped my experience, and how their care carried me through uncertainty, helped me feel safe and informed, and allowed me to have birth experiences that I didn’t know were possible.

Why I Chose a Tulsa Midwife for Both of My Births

Before having my first, I wasn’t exactly the “midwifery type”. But like I said, after 2020, something didn’t sit right with me about giving birth in the hospital. The more I researched about birth outcomes, benefits of giving birth vaginally + unmedicated, and the more birth stories I exposed myself to, the more I realized I wanted something different. I desired care that was beyond the quick in-and-out office visits. I wanted a prenatal experience that was relational and informative. Personal and prayerful. It definitely required a lot of research and questions on my end, but it led to a foundation of trust and I never felt like just a number.

Here’s what stood out to me most about my Tulsa midwife experience:

  • Every appointment mattered: There was time to talk. To ask. To be heard. I never felt like I had to follow the status quo, standard recommendations, or that my questions were a nuisance. They listened and helped me process, while providing information and data along the way. Trust went both ways.

  • Support without pressure: Whether it was a conversation about birth plans, ECV risks, or postpartum decisions, I was given facts, their personal experiences, and freedom to make the best choice for myself and my family, not fear.

  • Faith-centered care: This matters! The way their office is managed, the way they treat moms AND their families (kiddos welcome in the office!), and the attention to detail are a true testament to this.

  • Experience: Over 40 years of experience – and it shows. They’ve seen it all and confidently answered all of my questions and concerns about possible circumstances or situations that could arise.

  • The best birth team: They are attentive, intuitive, and conscientious. Grace and Marlita never missed a beat at either of my births – the perfect team, moving around each other and me + Jonathan with ease. They are there when you need them, working and active behind the scenes. And if you hear the words “home birth” and worry about the mess, you can be confident they will leave the space cleaner than what they walked into!

A Breech Baby and a Big Decision

At 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby, we found out she was breech. I was still planning a home birth, and this news completely threw me. After a lot of prayer, research, and conversations with my midwife, we decided to try an external cephalic version (ECV) to turn her. I had that procedure done with an OB in OKC which you can read more about here! It was not only Ruth and Grace’s connections, but their experiences and recommendation that encouraged me to pursue this path!

Thankfully, the ECV worked. And I was still able to move forward with a home birth!

That experience opened my eyes to how much power there is in having the right people in your corner. I wasn’t pressured or rushed. I was cared for with wisdom and calm and reminded that I had choices. That foundation and trust carried me into that first home birth experience and let me to return for my second birth. I couldn’t have been more honored that these women were leading me through this!

Would I Choose a Midwife Again?

Absolutely. Choosing a Tulsa midwife gave me the kind of care that I didn’t know I desired until I had it. It was deeply personal and yet professional. The experience changed how I think about birth entirely. And while challenging in their own ways, I absolutely loved my home birth experiences.

If you’re in Tulsa or the surrounding area and wondering if a midwife is right for you, I’d say: explore it. Ask questions and learn what’s possible. Whether you’re planning a home birth or birth center, midwifery care is about so much more than the location. It’s about being known, supported, and empowered in every decision you make for you and your baby!

For me, that started with Special Delivery Midwifery and I’m forever grateful!
