Tulsa Birth Center vs. Home Birth – Q&A with a Tulsa Midwife

Families

Choosing where to give birth in Tulsa is one of those decisions many moms simply want clear, trustworthy information on. For some moms, the answer feels obvious right away; for others, it simply sparks a desire to learn more and understand their options. Wherever you fall, it helps to hear thoughtful, experienced insight – especially from people who’ve supported many different births, in many different settings!

As a two-time home birth mom myself (you can read my birth stories here and here!), and as a Tulsa newborn photographer who has worked with families birthing at home with a Tulsa midwife, in a Tulsa birth center, and in hospital settings, I’ve seen just how nuanced this choice really is. It is not a one-size-fits all approach. More often, it’s about comfort, logistics, and the gut feeling of where you’ll feel most at ease.

I’m excited to share a Q&A with my friend (and our midwife – she delivered both of our girls!), Grace from Special Delivery, to weigh in. She graciously shares clarity, reassurance, and expert perspective for Tulsa families navigating this decision – without fear tactics or fluff. If you’re trying to decide between a home birth and a birth center (or somewhere in between), this conversation is a great place to start!

Q&A – How a Tulsa Midwife Helps Moms Navigate Choosing A Tulsa Birth Center vs. Home Birth

1. What types of families or situations tend to be a better fit for a home birth vs. a birth center?

I don’t see a specific type of family preferring one over the other necessarily. Families who aren’t wanting to be in the hospital, but aren’t 100% comfortable being home yet tend to prefer the birth center.

Otherwise, the main difference is distance from a hospital, we recommend being within 15-30 minutes of a hospital with a level 1 NICU and 24/7 Labor and Delivery unit in case of emergencies, so living too far away would be another good reason to come to a birth center.

2. Are there any common misconceptions you hear about each setting that you’d like to clarify?

Both settings have all of the medical equipment that you would need for a low-risk vaginal delivery and post-partum. The care we provide doesn’t change based upon your location!

We also hear people say that they worried about their home not being sterile. We ensure that anything that needs to be done using sterile techniques is done so (sutures, vaginal exams, catheters, IV placements, etc.)

Additionally, your home is the same environment baby will come home to and that your antibodies are used to, so it’s actually gentle on babies systems to be born at home.

3. What do you see as the main pros and cons of each option?

Birth center:

  • Close to hospital
  • No clean up in your own home
  • Restaurant choices if you get hungry
  • Don’t have to worry about preparing your home for delivery

Home birth:

  • You don’t have to drive anywhere in labor
  • Your own space – feeling of safety and comfort!
  • Midwives bring everything you need
  • Tucked into bed after delivery

4. How do you help families decide which setting might be best for them?

We always ask where you see yourself delivering and what is going to make you feel calmer and more at ease, then we also ask about distance from us and from a hospital.

If you relax better or will be more comfortable in your own space then I recommend delivering at home. If you are going to be worried about how clean your house is, or you don’t want to worry about your children being woken up or disrupted and it’s easier to leave to have baby, then the birth center is a great option!

5. If a mom is leaning toward one option but her partner is leaning toward the other, how do you help them find clarity?

We provide additional resources for the couple to continue to see which would be the best fit for them and emphasize how important it is for mom to feel the most comfortable and safe for the best possible birth outcome.

6. Are there elements of the birth center experience that parents can “borrow” to make a home birth feel more structured, or vice versa?

We have birth pools that we “loan out” for no additional charge in case the couple is hoping for a water birth. We also have birth stools, birth balls and peanut balls that easily brought to home births as well.

7. What would you want a first-time mom to know when considering where to give birth?

Where she is the most comfortable and can visualize giving birth is going to help her succeed the most!
